Advantage of 72mm filter size over a 52mm filter size on an Slr Lens?
I’m specifically asking in reference to the Nikon 18-200 vr.
OK I need to clarify my question. Is there an advantage to having a lens with a 72mm diameter over a lens with a 52mm diameter. I am not asking about filters. The diameter of the opening on the front of a lens is called the filter size of the lens.
If I understand your question right, you are asking what the advantage of a large barrel len over a narrow Barrel Lens? If this is the question then, the larger barrel lens will give you more light exposure if the f/stop is around F/2.8 – f/3.5. More light, faster lens than the narrow barrel lens. In some cases will even give you Wide Angle capabilities. The down side is the lenses are more expensive and the filters are also expensive.
