What are the best Nikon’s manual focus lenses?
I purchased Nikon FM2 and want to buy couple of lenses (one around 35mm and one around 20 or 24mm) What are the sharpest and with the best contrast manual lenses out there. Thanks
You may know this already but, you can actually use later AF and AF-D lenses too. Like the Nikon 50mm f/1,4 AF-D is actually a great AF lens that can also be used on the FM2…I know because I own the same camera. In general, so long as the lens is compatible with Nikon’s F-mount, not a “G” type lens that lacks an aperture ring or one invades the mirror box (FM2′s don’t have a mirror lockup), you can probably use it on your FM2 without a problem.
If you just want to be hardcore with manual focus only lenses, I’d highly recommend the 50mm f/1.2 AI-s or 50mm f/1.4 AI-s, both of which are still in limited production and still some of the sharpest Lenses Nikon has ever made. The f1.2 version will cost about $700 at BHPhoto while the f/1.4 costs about $400. There are also older “pre-AI” lenses made before 1977 that would need to be converted with a metering prong to allow your FM2′s meter to work properly.
Your other option, is Zeiss. Carl Zeiss Planar and Distagon lenses are also available for Nikon Cameras. Prices for these lenses are generally comparable to Nikon AI-s lenses because the manufacturing techniques are similar. I shot a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar T* next to a Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AI-s and saw no improvement over the Nikkor at comparable apertures. But the last time I looked, the manual focus Nikkors were all backordered at BH so Zeiss might be your only option for a true manual Focus Lens of notable quality.
