Thinking about running an old Craftsman mower with a “modified” air filter, how bad could that be?
I bought this lawnmower about a month ago, used, for cheap. $25 to be honest. I’ve spent about $50 on parts thus far and I really don’t feel like sinking anymore money into it. It’s a Craftsman mower with a Tecumseh TVS120 engine. The guy I bought it from fooled with the carb and screwed the linkages up. I corrected the linkage and cleaned the carb twice. It starts on one pull and always has. However it’s weak at start up until it “warms up” then it surges slightly in High Speed. It has never stopped surging ever since I bought it. I have tried several things until I took the air filter off. No sluggish starts and no surging. It has a cylinder like paper filter encased in a plastic collar that attaches to the carb. I’ve cut a hole in the center of the collar and placed a piece of tightly wooven window screening between the filter and the collar’s end. It runs like a champ, but I haven’t mowed/ bagged with it yet. Let me know what you think, thanks for reading.
If it was a brand new mower, I wouldn’t run it like that. The holes in the screen will still be big enough to allow harmful dirt or dust particles into the engine. Since you got it used and at a bargain price, I would just run it. I’m sure you’ll get your money’s worth out of it.
