Dark areas/shadow on pictures taken from my Nikon 40x when flash is used?

I have Nikon D40x and have a lens 24-115 mounted on it all the time. Day time pictures come in great but night time when I use flash, I get a dark area on bottom left of the picture. “I think” it is shadow of my lens depending on how far the object is but not certain. Is there a way to fix this? I don’t want to buy another lens or additional flash. Any other ideas appreciated.
You’re using the built in flash? In that case yes it’s quite possible that it’s your lens. There’s no way to fix this unless you get a smaller lens, don’t zoom in your lens when you’re close or buy a new flash. Frankly buying a new flash is a good investment, the onboard flash, though it can be useful does limit your options.
